ITINERARY
Upon arrival at Phuentsholing, the border gateway situated at an elevation of 293 meters above sea level, right next to Jaigaon in India, our journey into Bhutan will commence. We’ll begin by processing our e-route permits and paying the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of ₹1200 per person per night directly at the immigration counter. Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch before embarking on a scenic drive to Thimphu. This route will take us through the high hills of Gedu in Chukha, a hot and humid region known for its dense subtropical forests, which are particularly beautiful during winter. In the evening, we’ll check into our hotel in Thimphu for the night at Hotel Amodhara.
After breakfast, we’ll visit the magnificent Buddha Dordenma statue, a 169-foot tall marvel of gold and bronze, believed to be the largest seated Buddha in the Bhumisprasha Mudra (Earth Witnessing) posture. Next, we’ll head to the Royal Takin Preserve to observe Bhutan’s unique national animal. In the afternoon, our journey continues to Punakha, taking us over the stunning Dochula Pass. From here, you’ll be treated to a 180-degree panoramic view of the Eastern Himalayas, including the majestic Gangkar Puenseum, one of the world’s highest unclimbed peaks at 7,350 meters above sea level. Concluding our day, we’ll embark on a hike to the historic Chimi Lhakhang temple, renowned for its fertility blessings and distinctive phallus paintings and carvings.
Our drive to Trongsa takes us to the revered ancestral home of Bhutanese Kings, where we’ll encounter the Trongsa Dzong, Bhutan’s largest and most historically significant castle. We feel incredibly fortunate to have this rare opportunity to visit such an important fortress. Perched above the Dzong is the Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower transformed into a national museum in 1968. This museum houses a captivating collection of Bhutanese art, including exquisite bronze statues and paintings. Among its many treasures, the Original Raven Crown is a must-see. After exploring these historical sites, we’ll take a stroll through the charming Trongsa town.
After an early breakfast, we will embark on a scenic drive to Bumthang Valley, often referred to as the “mini Switzerland of Bhutan,” thanks to its picturesque landscapes and newly constructed roads that offer numerous opportunities for beautiful photo stops along the highway. In the afternoon, we will visit Jakar Dzong, historically known as the “Castle of the White Bird,” and then proceed to Jambay Lhakhang, Bhutan’s oldest temple, which marks the significant introduction of Buddhism to the region in 659 AD. In the evening, we will enjoy a leisurely stroll around the charming Bumthang town.
After breakfast today, we will explore Bumthang Valley, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, visiting numerous historical temples and monasteries. Our exploration will begin with Jambay Lhakhang, the oldest temple in Bhutan, followed by a visit to Kurje Lhakhang, a site blessed by Guru Padmasambhava. We will be staying overnight at Hotel Valley View.
In the morning, we’ll journey to the breathtaking Phobjikha Valley, often called the “Valley of the Black-Necked Cranes.” This serene, U-shaped glacial valley, set against the stunning Black Mountain range, is a true spectacle. Our visit includes exploring a significant Buddhist Monastery before embarking on a refreshing and easy downhill hike through the valley of cranes. To immerse ourselves in local life, we’ll experience a traditional farmhouse and visit the important Khewang Lhakhang temple. We’ll spend the night at Dewachen Hotel, nestled at an altitude of 2900m (9514 feet above sea level).
In the morning, we’ll check out from our hotel and drive towards Haa Valley via Chelela Pass in Paro, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan. On our way, we’ll stop to admire the breathtaking views of the Himalayas from Dochula Pass. In the evening, we’ll experience a traditional Hot Stone Bath at Homestay, where we’ll also spend the night
In the morning, you’ll explore Lhakhang Karpo, the historic monastery in Haa Valley, and take a stroll around Haa Town. Later in the afternoon, you’ll return to Paro and spend the night at Hotel Reema Resort.
Today promises an interesting hike to Bhutan’s iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Although the monastery was built in 1692, its history dates back to 746 AD with its foundation by Guru Padmasambhava. The uphill hike to the temple takes approximately 2.5 hours, ascending from the base at 2,340 meters above sea level to the temple itself at roughly 3,000 meters, with the highest point of the trail reaching 3,050 meters. It’s recommended to start early to catch the sunrise behind the temple’s cliffs. In the evening, consider trying a hot stone bath, which is known to be beneficial for joint pains and muscle cramps.
